5Surprisingly good sound quality  Dec 31, 2008 By Polly's Dad "Polly's Dad"
Short summary: this is a great product.

Longer discussion: I bought this because (a) I was sick of having to carry 20 CDs with me on trips, many of which would be damaged in the process; (b) because our CD player in the car was skipping like crazy recently; and (c) because we were planning on driving from PA to Florida (and back again) with two kids for the first time. I had bought an el cheapo fm transmitter but it was _awful_, so I decided to take a risk on a more expensive device, figuring that perhaps my previous bad experience was a "you get what you pay for" example.

The Satechi device shipped promptly and arrived quickly. I didn't bring any CDs on this trip -- just the Satechi transmitter and my wife's Sansa Fuze (also a Sansa View that we had just purchased for our daughter -- it works with both).

One small negative: our car (a Pontiac Vibe) has a standard transmission, and the stick shift is close to the cigarette lighter outlet. It was tricky to figure out a way to insert the Satechi in a way the didn't interfere with shifting into first, but I eventually managed to rotate and tilt it so that I could shift comfortably. One other small negative: it is difficult to read the display of the Sansa, but that's not surprising because it's meant to be held close to your eyes when using. My workaround there -- I pull out the Satechi with the MP3 player mounted and bring it close to my face if I need to search for things while driving. (An even better approach: select "Play All" so that I don't have to do any searching for music.)

Now for the positives: the device works _extremely_ well. I set the station to 87.7 and never had to change the setting for the entire trip from PA down to Florida and back again. The sound quality was surprisingly good. I was expecting AM-quality sound, and found instead that the sound really _was_ CD quality. In fact, my wife thinks that the MP3 player and the Satechi/radio combination sounds _better_ than the CD. ("It's like the CD, except that this sounds like it's in stereo.") Of course, part of this might be due to the crappy quality of our car's CD player, but the fact remains that the MP3 player with the Satechi sounded VERY good. I actually look forward to driving now because I enjoy listening to the music in the car.

The controls on the Satechi are very straightforward and are easy to use. The clamps are very clever and are easy to use, and the MP3 player styas very securely in the device. And whereas I had some challenges getting things to fit without blocking the stick shift, the advantage is that everything is there in one place. I found that without looking, I could rest my hand on the stick shift and lean my fingers over to control the Sansa Fuze.

By the way, at one point in the trip, my daughter's Sansa View ran out of battery power (we had been driving for 9 hours already). Easy solution: we simply traded MP3 players -- she used my wife's Fuze (which had been charging all day with the Satechi), and we plugged her View into the Satechi -- worked fine.

One other thing: different MP3 tracks seem to be different in terms of volume and such, so I have found that I will occasionally change the equalizer and volume settings on the radio when switching between one album and another. Not a problem at all.

Bottom line: this is a very good product. I highly recommend it.

4Very good option for using Sansa Fuze in car.  Nov 22, 2008 By ldolamore
Satechi shipped the transmitter very quickly and it arrived 3 days after ordering.
The Sansa Fuze fits the holder well and the cable plugs into the Fuze as a good match. The plug-in to the power jack (cigarette lighter) fits firmly. I had the device operating within a few minutes. I located several clear radio frequencies so no trouble matching the transmitter to the car radio.
The sound quality is good but it is not as good as a direct connection to a stereo as there is some loss of volume. The radio volume must be increased compared to playing radio stations or CDs.
The sound quality is adequate for use in a car, especially given that road/tire noise is present anyway that makes a car less than perfect as a music listening room. Given that I have no input on my car radio and no cassette player (to use a cassette converter) the FM transmitter was the only affordable option.
I would recommend this transmitter as the cost is reasonable, the delivery time is great, and the device is not complicated to operate and functions well.

5Amazing Buy!  Jan 24, 2009 By William Dickel "Gadget Unsavvy"
I bought this product after researching mp3 FM transmitters for a few months. This product seemed to have a good price/rating ratio so I figured I take the jump and order one. What an amazing deal! Pros...#1) The sound and power that come through this gadget and out my car speakers is fantastic. It plays my mp3 just as loud and deep as my auto stereo plays my cd's. #2) The transmission is superior. I live in a rural area of Northeastern PA. Very mountainous. I go to school in a very urban area about 1.5 hours away in the Scranton area of PA. I keep it tuned to 88.7 and haven't had to adjust it, not even once, ever since. No white noise or background interference at all. This makes me very happy since this seems to be one of the most common complaints with these transmitters. #3) I love the cradle. It prevents my mp3 player (Sansa Fuze) from sliding all across my seat or center console by keeping it nice and snug (and charging) while I drive. It is very convenient. #4) The cradle also shuts off automatically when the car is turned off, so if anyone with issues of their car battery being drained, you won't have to worry about that.
Ok..only one con...I wish it came with a cigarette adapter that would lengthen it a bit. I have a very deep cigarette lighter compartment, so the cradle barely makes it out of that pocket which results in it being right up against my shifter when my car is in park. Kind of annoying as I'm always knocking it with my fingers when I place my car in park. I did find a lengthener on Amazon for under 10 bucks so I ordered one last week.
This product is a keeper!

3Run of the Mill  Dec 22, 2008 By J. Johnson "Vol FAN"
I purchased this for my Sansa View. My only complaints are that the adjustment knob that controls tilt of the fm transmitter is weak and won't hold, you can replace with a nut and bolt and probably be fine but you shouldn't have to. Also I've noticed if the temperature drops below freezing and you leave this in your car, on startup the transmitter doesn't remember the station you left in set to, in fact it starts at 0.1 MHZ and you have to scan up to 88.1 which takes quite a while.

For the money it's not a bad buy and you can definately work around the quirks mentioned here.

2Works as long as you don't mind 5 seconds of static  Feb 17, 2009 By Brad
Pros:
Station selection can be chosen in increments of .1
Broadcasts silence on the station when it is turned on and nothing is playing.

Cons:

What no one tells you is that you have to hold down the power button for 5 seconds everytime you turn on your car to turn it on... I have no idea why they added this "feature" but I find it annoying as you have to either remember to turn off your radio before you turn your car off, or listen to 5 seconds of static while you wait for it to turn on.

I bought it because I liked the idea of having my mp3 player held in place... I now realize that it would be much easier to use if it had a cord so I didn't have to reach down and play with it. It is much easier if to use if you can hold your mp3 player near the stearing wheel to adjust rather then leaning over to look at it all the time.

I have also noticed that with the Sansa Fuze you need to either plug it in and wait for it to power on, or power on the Satechi transmitter before you plug in the Fuze because if they both turn on together it has a tendency to cause your device to refresh the database which can take a bit as well as causing the device to lose where you were in the playlist.

Also the instructions recomend setting the device backlight to always on to improve the signal... which is can be an issue since the Fuze and View don't have this option, and I don't know about the other models, but would seem to be a bit annoying to switch on and off as you switch between car and non car use.

The 2 sliding pads that hold the device in place are hard to move, and can pop out of the track easily
