| | Description | The Satechi LH-83J Lens Hood is primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. One of the most important accessories for each lens you own. A lens hood provides multiple functions: it shades the lens from stray light, improving your contrast and image quality; in inclement weather, it can assist in keeping moisture or wind-blown debris off the lens; and it protects the front barrel from the inevitable impacts against walls, door frames, and other real-life obstacles. This accessory replaces EW-83J / EW83J and compatible with Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens | |

Inexpensive, not cheap Jan 15, 2010

"boy clothes"
Although one could laugh at a guy buying a $1000 lens like the Canon 17-55mm f2.8 who then makes a big deal over the cost of the extra lens hood, apparently I am not alone. There are about a half dozen after market hoods just for this lens that aim to cut the Canon price by more than a half (street price). In practice, most of them, like the Satechi reviewed here, are one third the street price of the Canon 83j hood. In any case, I bought the Satechi instead of the Canon and I am completely happy.
1. Some reviewers had commented that the fit of this hood was stiff or that it needed trimming. Mine was perfect out of the box. They could have improved or perhaps I was lucky. Both the normal and storage (reversed on the lens) positions worked fine. The unit snapped on and clicked in place just like my L series hood for my 70-200 f2.8L.
2. The unit does not have a lot of advertising for Satechi, which is great. Their logo is discreetly printed in a low-key fashion in only one spot on the hood.
3. It seems as sturdy as any of the Canon non-L hoods I have touched.
4. When I first put the hood on, I immediately zoomed to 17mm to see how the vignetting would be. What I found is that it is hard to distinguish from the vignetting that the lens has at f2.8/17mm without the hood. My impression is that it adds a tiny amount, but my GUESS (this is a guess because I don't have the Canon version to compare) is that the Canon would have this same issue since these knock-offs tend to be exactly like the original.
5. My main use for this hood is more front element and filter protection rather than avoiding reflections. So, if this thing dies saving the filter, the lens or both, I'm OK. At the price, it's a consumable item. Frankly, as commented above, I don't think it will be an issue.
6. The inside of the unit is finished in something that seems like black matte paint. I think it is probably not as effective as the Canon flocking that others have commented on if you pushed it to the limit (shooting partially into the sun near sunrise/sunset, etc.). However, I have noticed no issues and find that the hood is much, much better than NO hood, which is what I was doing for six months before finding this thing. I'm going to call the flocking a non-issue for me.
Summary
This is a great alternative to the overpriced Canon hood. In fact, since it costs less than most ink jet cartridges, you can think of it as being a consumable item! Keep one as backup.
Canon marketing, if you read this, you would have been much better off selling the hood with the lens in the first place and ripping us all off on the whole package instead of making us think about it and find other sources. The 17-55 f2.8 is a unique lens for the EOS system with no real satisfactory alternatives in the APS sensors. When there is a good alternative to something that is overpriced, like a dumb lens hood, we customers will all flock to it if you make us think about.

Works fine Dec 12, 2009
By T. Murphy Does the job for less expense than the Canon option. Have never tried the Canon hood so Canon product may be a little more sturdy, but this one fits my lens fine and performs well.

Good Enough Dec 02, 2009
By M. Kleimeyer In comparison to the Canon hoods, this in NOT just the same hunk of plastic only cheaper. The canon has a really nice felt-like interior that prevents glare/reflection off of the smooth plastic that the Satechi has. The canon hoods, especially the L hoods that come with the L lenses, also seem to fit better that the 3rd party hoods. There usually seems to be a point with the knockoffs where I have to ask myself, "Am I about to break this thing trying to wrench it on?". My guess is that the Canon hoods will outlast the knockoffs in long term durability.
Then again, it's 90% the performance of the Canon at <50% the price.

Satechi hood for Canon lens Sep 26, 2009
By Chas Berlin Decided to try an Satechi hood rather than spring for the Canon lens hood which was about twice the price of the Satechi. The hood was delivered quickly and other than the brand name it looks identical to the Canon hood.
I'd recommend Satechi lens hoods as an a quality alternative to the expensive Canon brand hoods.

Does the Job for a Fraction of the Price Jul 07, 2009
By Kyle Krafka If you are in need of a lens hood and you are on a budget, this is the hood for you. By not purchasing Canon's hood at twice the price, you are giving up a few things:
- velvet lining on the inside; Satechi's hood is matted and dark, but no velvet
- sturdy construction; Satechi's hood should be fine in most cases, but it doesn't have that quality feel of a harder plastic hood
- perfect fit; you may have to fiddle a bit with Satechi's hood until you get used to the fit. As I read somewhere online, a bit of body oil helped.
From what I can tell, though, your images will come out the same whether you use this hood or Canon's, so if you're looking for a cheaper alternative, this is it!
