4improved remote  Mar 30, 2009 By Robert J
As I searched for an inexpensive alternative to Canon's TC80N3 the primary criticism I found in the reviews I read for the Satechi TR3MAA that it lacked an on and off switch. The Satechi developers must have read the same reviews. The most recent TR3MAA version now contains an on and off switch. I also discovered that contact with Satechi's tech support department in response to any of my questions has been both prompt and informative.

5Does the same for half the price  Jul 29, 2008 By Nikolay Makarov
The remote has basicly all the same functionality as Canon timer remote, but costs near half of that. No big pluses, no minuses, just saves your money. Works with all Canon cameras with compatible connector (means all non-Rebel DSLRs), not just only with the listed.
The minor omission, it does not have off switch and does not have sleep mode, so uses battery all the time. Hopefully does not use it too much - no recharges yet.

3Decent with flaws  Jul 31, 2009 By D. Inskeep
This is a decent and much cheaper alternative to the Canon version. I have the newer version with the on-off switch.

However, there are a few quirks. First, actual exposure time seems to be the bulb setting (BU) less whatever the interval (INT) is plus one. So if you set you BU to 50 seconds, INT to 5 seconds, your actual exposures will be 46 seconds. Weird, but I can deal with this.

The second quirk I found is much more of a problem until you figure it out - hopefully this helps someone. The seconds amount of the exposure time (BU) must be at least one more than the seconds of interval (INT) or the interval becomes 99 hours, 59 minutes, 59 seconds. So if you set BU to 1 minute even and INT to any number of seconds, your interval becomes the max. Pretty annoying. To get around this, set BU to any number of minutes plus 1 second more than your INT. So if you want a 5 second interval, you need to do a 1 minute 6 second expsoure. Which based on what I noted above, will actually give you a 1 minute 2 second exposure.

I have not contacted support about this - for my purposes (astrophotography) a few seconds deviation is OK, as my exposures are in the 4 to 5 minute range.

3Cheap and functional, but has a flimsy case...  Jul 14, 2009 By Pete the Photographer "Pete"
This review is as of 2009.07.13 and is of the second model, with the on/off switch.

Not wanting to pay Canon's ridiculous price for a timer, I tried this instead. It definitely does the job, but has several drawbacks.

First, the case is just too thin and cheaply made. Pushing the buttons is make difficult by the cheapness of the case, as is changing bateries.

Secondly, the instructions are printed in a font so small that they are very difficult to read.

Thirdly, the illumination light does not stay on for very long - just long enough to quit before you are through getting it set up, forcing you to start over. It would be better to leave it on as long as people are pushing buttons.

This timer does function as advertised, once you get past the annoyances.

A good point to remember is that if you want to let the timer shoot forever, set the counter to ZERO.

Hopefully the developers will listen as they have in the past, a come out with a better model.

4The clock is ticking  Sep 28, 2009 By Black Belt Systems "fyngyrz"
Aside from a little oddness with subtracting the interval from the actual shutter time, and a not quite perfect fit for the electrical connection to the camera (hence four stars and not five), this is a good product. I've been using it for a long series of astrophotos, and it's done just what I needed it to do. It's very easy to use; a few clicks and you're good to go. Also, totally surprising me, Satechi contacted me to make sure I'd received the product and that I was satisfied. Total kudos for that, folks. At the same time I ordered the timer, I ordered an Astrotrac combo kit from Adorama, a tripod head from someone else, some mounting plates from yet someone else, and some random in-stock stuff from Amazon. Satechi was the first to my door -- by three *days*.

I have no problem recommending the product, or the company. A great experience all around.
